Life is a marathon, not a sprint

Life is a marathon, not a sprint

Life is a marathon, not a sprint.

Most of us inherently know this already, but it’s something that needs a constant reminder.

In this day and age of instant access, it’s easy to forget that questions we want answered, or goals we want to achieve often take time. As an example, let’s take the process of learning a new skill.

If you’ve been reading this blog, you know that I play power wheelchair soccer. I started in 2009.

The first couple years were difficult because I wasn’t developing as fast as I thought I should.

I’m a quick learner, and within the first two or three years of playing, I thought I understood the basic concepts. However, my understanding wasn’t translating into my performance.

I thought I knew what I was doing, but looking back, I realize I had no clue. It wasn’t until 2014 – five years later – when I finally understood what was going on.

My teammates were some of the best players in the world and they gave me an understanding of the sport.

Five years seems like an eternity, especially today.

When going through the process of learning, we want results immediately. This still holds true for me.

However, when I try to rush the process, the process always reminds me who’s in charge.

The same is true now for my voice over journey. I’m constantly reminded that growth and development take time.

During my individual coaching sessions, I thought I understood the concepts, but when I go back and listen to all my older recordings, I realize that I may have “understood“, but I needed to practice and develop.

Remember, life is a marathon, not a sprint. As long as you put one foot in front of the other, even if you need a break, you will eventually reach the finish line.
