Who are you competing against?

Me...competing in power soccer

Competing against others is something I have always enjoyed. From my first video game system on my 8th birthday, to the power soccer courts today, I have always found a way to test myself against others.

When I began my voice over journey in October 2019, I naturally brought my competitive spirit with me. “I’m going to beat out everyone and work my way up to becoming a top-tier talent…”

It’s March 2020 and I’ve quickly realized that this is the wrong philosophy. Make no mistake, it’s still my goal to work my way up and become a top-tier talent. I want to be voicing national spots (I know, welcome to the party), and I’m taking steps everyday to get there. So what changed?

I recently attended an online workshop, and the host said something simple, yet profound:

Some of us may sound similar. Many of us may be auditioning for the same jobs. However, our voices have unique qualities. Whether or not we get the job isn’t necessarily decided by how great our performance was. It’s often decided by whether or not our voice fits what they’re looking for.

Wow.

You should still put in your best effort for every audition. Just remember: if you don’t get a job, it may have nothing to do with you.

So, I ask again…who are you competing against? Yourself.

Everyday, you will wake up and make decisions that will determine if you achieve your goals. You can watch Netflix, or work on building your business. You can practice your mic skills, or you can browse Facebook (guilty).

No one further along in their career is taking steps to hold you back. On the contrary, if you’re willing to work, these same people are more than happy to help bring you up.

I have been competitive for as long as I can remember. My voice over journey is a competition.

I just have to conquer myself to win.
